Ph.D in Computer Science
Goals of the Programme
To develop competencies, expand knowledge and skills of the learners to independently apply relevant scientific research principles in identifying problems and emerging challenges in the field of Computer Science. To generate new knowledge to enhance existing theories, concepts, and practice for the overall good of humanity.
Duration of the Programme
The programme shall be conducted in two possible modes of study:
- Full-time Mode: This mode Shall take a minimum of three (3) academic years and a maximum of five (5) academic years full time, distributed over six and ten consecutive semesters of full-time attendance respectively.
- Part-time Mode: This mode Shall normally take a minimum of four (4) academic years and a maximum of seven (7) academic years of attendance from the date of registration.

Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme
By the end of the programme the learners should be able to:
- Evaluate, critically and objectively, recent advances in computer science and identify gaps of knowledge that would lead to further research.
- Implement own proposals for solving research problems identified within specific areas in computer science and critically evaluate the efficacies of own research efforts.
- Communicate knowledge gained during research to peers, young researchers, and students of computer science, effectively, through presentations, publications or research papers, and writing of the Ph.D. thesis.
- Initiate and carry out independent research within a specific area of computer science.
- Supervise advanced research within a specific area of computer science in academia and industry.

Rules and regulations on admission into the Doctoral Programmes of Maseno University shall apply.
Programme Requirements
The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science shall be conducted by Coursework, Research, and Thesis. A candidate will be required to carry out independent, individual research on an identified Ph.D. level Research Problem in a relevant area of specialization in the field of Computer Science.
Examinations
The examination rules and regulations for postgraduate studies of the School of Graduate Studies of Maseno University shall apply.
Research Task Distribution
The basic tasks involved in undertaking the Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science degree programme shall include making a research proposal, carrying out research investigations on the stated problem, and writing a Ph.D. thesis based on the research.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science degree programme shall normally consist of nineteen (19) units of the thesis which are distributed as shown in the table given below. One unit amounts to 45 contact hours.
